  • Pigeon Run Cemetery was abandoned many times and for many years. We formed a non-profit to save this little piece of history. There are 7 Revolutionary War, 3 War of 1812 and 2 Civil War veterans buried here. Rev. Samuel Eakin is buried here. He was born in Red Lion, graduated from Jersey College (now Princeton) was ordained in Philly and served as Chaplain for both the South Jersey and Delaware Militias. He later became the first pastor to give a sermon in English at the Pencader Presbyterian Church in Glasgow, Delaware. Welsh was the previous language. The cemetery is only 1/2 acre and the oldest burial known is John Bryan, (1656-1736).We have a private Facebook group, Friends of Pigeon Run Cemetery, Inc. If you would like to join, just ask. There are many photos of our restoration work as well as many documents. We are also on findagrave.com. You may also send an email to friendsofpigeonrun@comcast.net.
    Thank you.

  • Pigeon Run Cemetery is a cemetery which, as far as I have determined at this time, was started in conjunction with a meeting house (near Red Lyon), circa 1728, by the New Castle Presbytery. The meeting house reportedly burned around 1760, and was not rebuilt, but the cemetery was used until about 1910. A nonprofit organization, Friends of Pigeon Run Cemetery, has been formed. A group of interested persons, including our county councilman, state senators, Pencader Heritage Area Association members and local residents, make up our group and are working to restore, and more importantly, maintain this historical cemetery. A "Go Fund Me" page is being established to help in our efforts. Additionally, the cemetery is registered with the Delaware Distressed Cemetery Board in Dover. We have several initial projects on which we are working; 1) Removal of six hundred foot trees, in danger of falling. 2) Complete a Ground-penetrating Radar (GPR) scan to determine all burials and possibly locate the old meeting house. 3) Repair and reset the tombstones and markers. 4) Once the GPR and repairs are completed, appropriately landscaping the cemetery.
Information is being posted on our Facebook group page, Friends of Pigeon Run Cemetery Incorporated and at https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/1965751/pigeon-run-cemetery

  • I am not sure what the rating system here is used for or based on but I am giving this cemetery 5 stars because of its historical value and potential. There is a group of volunteers we at the Pencader Heritage Area Assoc. are helping to support that is doing an AMAZING job of re-discovering and restoring this sacred ground. The cemetery has been abandoned for many decades and forgotten/re-discovered only to be forgotten again for many decades more (documents from the 1800 describe its condition as shameful and poor). There are nearly a dozen Veterans from the American Revolutionary War, War of 1812 and the Civil war interred here. There are more than a few people buried here who in their time were noteworthy but this only demonstrates that in the end, fame and fortune matter little. Check out "Friends of Pigeon Run Cemetery" on Facebook for pictures that show the AMAZING work being done there. And check out "PencaderHeritage.org" while your at it. If you love history, you will love what I am talking about.
